What Is Lip Blush?

Lip blush is a semi-permanent makeup treatment that deposits pigment into the lips using a professional SPMU machine and needle cartridge.

The treatment is designed to enhance the visible colour, border and shape of suitable clients’ lips.

Lip blush may help create the appearance of:

  • More defined lip borders
  • A more balanced-looking lip shape
  • More even-looking lip colour
  • A soft tinted finish
  • A fuller-looking lip without adding physical volume

Healed results vary according to the client’s natural lip tone, skin response, pigment selection, technique and aftercare.

Lip Mapping and Shape Design

Careful mapping is required before pigment is applied.

You will learn how to:

  • Assess the client’s natural lip shape
  • Review visible asymmetry
  • Identify the natural lip border
  • Create a balanced treatment outline
  • Use mapping thread and a mapping pencil
  • Check the shape from different angles
  • Gain the client’s approval before treatment

Lip blush enhances the existing lip area. It should not be used to draw significantly beyond the natural lip border.

Colour Theory and Pigment Selection

You will study colour theory and learn how to choose a suitable pigment for the client.

Product selection should consider:

  • The client’s natural lip tone
  • Skin undertone
  • The requested healed result
  • Warm and cool pigment properties
  • How pigment may change during healing
  • Existing colour within the lips

The colour seen immediately after treatment will usually appear stronger than the final healed result.

Client Consultation

A detailed consultation must take place before treatment.

You will learn how to discuss:

  • The client’s treatment goals
  • Relevant medical information
  • Medication
  • Allergies and sensitivities
  • Previous lip treatments
  • Previous SPMU procedures
  • History of reactions or complications
  • Contraindications
  • Expected healed results
  • Consent and treatment records

The consultation helps you decide whether the client is suitable or whether treatment should be changed, delayed or refused.

SPMU Machine and Needle Training

You will learn how to prepare and operate the professional SPMU machine included with the course.

The practical training covers:

  • Machine setup
  • Needle cartridge selection
  • Machine grip and hand position
  • Speed and pressure control
  • Working at a suitable depth
  • Creating consistent pigment coverage
  • Monitoring the skin response
  • Cleaning and protecting the machine
  • Safe cartridge disposal

You must follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the machine, cartridges and pigments used.

Practice Skin and Live Model Training

You will begin by practising mapping and machine techniques on synthetic practice skin.

Once your tutor is satisfied with your preparation and control, you will progress to supervised treatments on two live models.

The model sessions include:

  • Client consultation
  • Lip assessment
  • Colour selection
  • Lip mapping
  • Preparing the treatment area
  • Machine and cartridge preparation
  • Controlled pigment application
  • Monitoring client comfort
  • Completing treatment records
  • Providing aftercare advice

Risks, Side Effects and Contraindications

Lip blush is an invasive semi-permanent makeup treatment and carries risks and possible side effects.

You will learn how to explain these clearly and obtain informed consent.

The course covers:

  • Expected swelling and tenderness
  • Temporary changes in colour
  • Possible pigment reactions
  • Infection risks
  • Uneven pigment retention
  • Recognising an unsuitable response
  • When treatment should be stopped
  • When the client should seek medical advice

You will also learn how to identify contraindications that may require treatment to be adapted, delayed or refused.

Health, Safety and Licensing

Strict hygiene and infection-control procedures are required when performing lip blush treatments.

The course covers:

  • Preparing a hygienic treatment area
  • Hand hygiene
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Preparing the client’s lips
  • Using sterile and single-use items
  • Preventing cross-contamination
  • Safe needle cartridge handling
  • Sharps disposal
  • Cleaning the machine and surfaces
  • Keeping accurate treatment records
  • Relevant licensing requirements

You must confirm the licensing, premises, clinical-waste and insurance requirements that apply in your working area.
