Body Massage Course

The Body Massage Course teaches beginners how to plan and perform a professional full-body massage using controlled, hands-on techniques.

Body massage is a core treatment offered across beauty salons, spas, hotels and massage clinics. It can also provide a foundation for students who later want to study more advanced massage treatments.

The anatomy and physiology element is completed online before attending the academy. This allows more of the practical training day to focus on massage movements, treatment flow and supervised practice.

You will learn how to prepare the treatment area, consult with your client and complete a structured body massage routine. The course also covers adapting the treatment to suit the client’s comfort, concerns and preferred pressure.

After successful completion, you will receive a Body Massage Diploma. The course is accredited and insurable, subject to arranging suitable professional insurance before offering treatments.

Developing Professional Massage Technique

A professional massage requires more than applying pressure to the body. Your movements should be controlled, connected and suited to the treatment area.

You will learn how to maintain a steady rhythm and move between different parts of the treatment without interrupting the client’s experience.

Your tutor will demonstrate how to:

  • Position your hands correctly
  • Control the depth of pressure
  • Maintain a consistent treatment rhythm
  • Adapt movements to different areas of the body
  • Move smoothly between treatment stages
  • Check and maintain client comfort

Planning a Full-Body Massage Routine

The course teaches you how to follow a clear massage sequence rather than treating each area without a plan.

You will learn how to prepare the client, complete the practical routine and finish the treatment professionally.

The routine can be adapted according to the information gathered during consultation. Pressure and positioning may also be adjusted throughout the appointment.

Client Consultation

A consultation must be completed before the massage begins.

You will learn how to ask about the client’s treatment goals, previous massage experience and relevant health information.

The consultation helps you decide whether the treatment is suitable and whether any adaptations are required.

You will also learn when a massage should be delayed or refused and when a client may need medical advice before booking.

Anatomy and Physiology

The online theory introduces the anatomy and physiology needed to support safe massage practice.

This knowledge helps you understand the areas being treated and why pressure should be adapted across different parts of the body.

The theory also supports your understanding of contraindications, treatment planning and professional boundaries.

Health, Safety and Hygiene

The treatment area, equipment and therapist must be prepared before every appointment.

The course covers:

  • Preparing the massage area
  • Maintaining personal hygiene
  • Cleaning equipment and surfaces
  • Using suitable massage products
  • Protecting client comfort and privacy
  • Keeping clear client records
  • Working within your professional training

Contraindications and Treatment Restrictions

Body massage is not suitable for every client or every situation.

You will learn how to recognise contraindications that may require the massage to be adapted, postponed or declined.

The course also explains the importance of avoiding diagnosis and referring clients for medical advice when a concern falls outside your professional scope.

What You Will Learn

  • Relevant anatomy and physiology
  • Health, safety and hygiene
  • Client consultation
  • Contraindications and treatment restrictions
  • Preparing the treatment room
  • Preparing and positioning the client
  • Professional massage movements
  • Controlling pressure and rhythm
  • Adapting the treatment to client needs
  • Maintaining client comfort
  • Following a structured body massage routine
  • Moving smoothly between treatment areas
  • Using massage products appropriately
  • Completing and finishing the treatment
  • Providing homecare and aftercare advice

Homecare and Aftercare

You will learn how to explain suitable aftercare following the massage.

Aftercare should be clear, realistic and relevant to the treatment completed. You will also learn how to advise clients to seek appropriate professional guidance if they experience an unexpected concern.

Student Reviews

19 August 2026

I was completely new to massage before this course, so I was worried about getting the pressure wrong. The tutor showed me how to adjust it for different areas and I felt much more confident by the end.

I enjoyed how hands on the course was. The tutor corrected my hand position a few times and that made the movements feel much smoother and more natural.

Isla Rose

The anatomy and physiology work helped a lot before the practical day. It made me understand why certain areas need lighter pressure and when a treatment might not be suitable.
