Hot stone massage builds on the skills used in a standard body massage. Heated stones are introduced at selected stages to support relaxation and create a warming spa treatment.

You will learn how to prepare the stones, position them safely and use them alongside hands-on massage techniques.

The course is intended for students who already hold a Body Massage qualification. Complete beginners can study hot stone massage as part of the Complete Spa Therapist Course.

After successful completion, you will receive a Hot Stone Massage Diploma. The course is accredited and insurable, subject to holding the required massage qualification and arranging suitable professional insurance.

How Hot Stone Massage Works

Hot stone massage combines warmed stones with manual massage movements.

Some stones may be positioned on selected areas of the body, while others may be held and moved during the massage routine.

The heat and pressure must be controlled throughout the treatment. The routine should be adapted according to the treatment area, client comfort and information gathered during consultation.

Preparing the Stones

The stones must be prepared before the client arrives.

You will learn how to organise the equipment, prepare the treatment area and select suitable stones for different stages of the routine.

The course covers:

  • Preparing the stone-heating equipment
  • Selecting suitable stones
  • Organising stones by size and purpose
  • Checking stones before use
  • Maintaining suitable heat throughout the treatment
  • Handling and storing stones correctly
  • Cleaning the equipment after treatment

Stone Placement Techniques

Placement stones must be positioned with care and should not be placed randomly across the body.

You will learn how to select suitable treatment areas and maintain client comfort while the stones are in position.

Your tutor will explain how to introduce and remove the stones without disrupting the flow of the massage.

Massage Techniques Using Heated Stones

Heated stones can also be used as massage tools.

You will practise holding the stones securely and combining them with movements already used in body massage.

The course teaches you how to:

  • Maintain control of the stones
  • Adapt pressure across different areas
  • Use smooth and continuous movements
  • Move between manual and stone techniques
  • Maintain a consistent treatment rhythm
  • Check client comfort during the routine

Creating a Complete Hot Stone Routine

The treatment should follow a clear sequence from preparation through to completion.

You will learn how to combine placement stones, moving stones and manual massage techniques within one professional routine.

Your tutor will demonstrate how to move between each stage without leaving the client unattended or interrupting the treatment flow.

Client Consultation and Treatment Planning

A detailed consultation must be completed before every hot stone massage.

You will learn how to discuss the client’s treatment goals, massage preferences and relevant health information.

The consultation helps you decide whether hot stones are suitable and whether the routine, heat or pressure needs to be adapted.

Hot Stone Massage Safety

Hot stone treatments require careful equipment handling and regular communication with the client.

You will learn how to monitor the stones and avoid using unsuitable heat or pressure.

The course also covers contraindications that may require the treatment to be changed, delayed or refused.

You must work within your professional training and refer clients for appropriate advice when a concern falls outside your scope.
