What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup technique that uses a handheld tool fitted with fine needles to deposit pigment into the skin.

The technique creates individual strokes designed to resemble natural brow hairs.

Microblading may be used to improve the visible appearance of:

  • Sparse-looking brows
  • Uneven brow shapes
  • Gaps within the natural brows
  • Brows lacking visible definition
  • Areas affected by reduced brow hair

Final healed results vary according to the client’s skin, pigment selection, technique, healing response and aftercare.

Three-Day Course Structure

Day 1: Online Theory

The first day is completed through the online training portal.

The theory prepares you for practical academy training and introduces the principles of safe professional microblading.

Topics include:

  • Relevant skin Anatomy and Physiology
  • Health and safety
  • Professional hygiene
  • Client consultation
  • Contraindications
  • Client suitability
  • Brow mapping principles
  • Hair-stroke patterns
  • Pigment selection
  • Treatment procedure
  • Homecare and aftercare

Days 2 and 3: Practical Academy Training

The second and third days take place at the Glasgow academy.

Your tutor will demonstrate the treatment before guiding you through practical exercises.

The practical training includes:

  • Preparing the treatment area
  • Completing a consultation
  • Assessing the client’s brows
  • Brow mapping
  • Preparing microblading tools
  • Creating hair-stroke patterns
  • Practising on synthetic skin
  • Working under tutor supervision
  • Providing homecare and aftercare advice

Brow Mapping and Shape Design

Brow mapping helps you plan a shape that complements the client’s natural features.

You will learn how to:

  • Assess the natural brow structure
  • Review facial proportions
  • Identify the brow start, arch and tail
  • Create a balanced brow outline
  • Compare both brows
  • Adjust the design where appropriate
  • Gain the client’s approval before treatment

The mapped design should suit the individual client rather than follow one fixed brow shape.

Microblading Hair-Stroke Patterns

You will learn the fundamental hair-stroke techniques needed to create natural-looking brow patterns.

The course covers:

  • Correct tool position
  • Hand positioning
  • Stroke direction
  • Spacing between strokes
  • Following natural hair growth
  • Adapting patterns to different brow structures
  • Depth and pressure control
  • Maintaining consistent strokes
  • Using the universal brow pattern

You will practise the technique on synthetic skin before progressing to supervised treatment work.

Client Consultation and Suitability

A detailed consultation must take place before every microblading treatment.

You will learn how to review:

  • The client’s desired brow result
  • Natural brow condition
  • Skin type and tone
  • Relevant medical information
  • Medication
  • Allergies and sensitivities
  • Previous semi-permanent makeup
  • Previous reactions or complications
  • Contraindications
  • Expected healed results
  • Consent and treatment records

The consultation helps you decide whether the client is suitable or whether treatment should be changed, delayed or refused.

Colour and Pigment Selection

Pigment should be selected according to the client’s natural brow colour, skin tone and intended result.

You will learn how to consider:

  • Natural brow hair colour
  • Skin tone and undertone
  • Warm and cool pigment properties
  • The requested brow finish
  • Expected healed colour
  • How pigment may change during healing

The colour visible immediately after treatment may appear stronger than the final healed result.

Health, Safety and Hygiene

Strict hygiene and infection-control procedures are required when performing microblading.

The course covers:

  • Preparing a hygienic treatment area
  • Hand hygiene
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Preparing the client’s skin
  • Using sterile and single-use items
  • Preventing cross-contamination
  • Safe microblading tool handling
  • Sharps disposal
  • Cleaning surfaces and equipment
  • Keeping accurate treatment records

You must also follow the licensing, premises, hygiene and clinical-waste requirements that apply in your working area.

Practical Training and Models

The academy training includes practice-skin exercises and supervised practical work.

The original course information indicates that model work forms part of the training. Exact model timings should be confirmed with the academy before attending.

During practical work, your tutor will assess:

  • Consultation and client communication
  • Brow assessment
  • Brow mapping
  • Tool preparation
  • Hair-stroke design
  • Depth and pressure control
  • Professional hygiene
  • Client comfort
  • Aftercare advice
